La festa organizzata dalla Fondazione Turner – quella della mia famiglia – è una delle migliori a cui io abbia mai partecipato. Sono un po’ infastidita nell’ammettere che il merito non è mio: non ho alzato un dito per questo evento.
Come avrei potuto, d’altronde, se mi trovavo in un altro continente?
Mentre mia zia Candice e mia sorella Calliope si davano da fare per rendere il party perfetto e sensazionale, io tentavo di cancellare tutti i casini della mia vita.
Non è servito.
Ogni azione compiuta per sciogliere il garbuglio emotivo che ho dentro ha fatto solo aumentare la mia frustrazione e impotenza. Non sono neanche riuscita a dimenticare, tutti gli sforzi sono stati vani.
Sono tornata a casa da neanche ventiquattro ore e tutto ciò da cui ho cercato di scappare è qui ad attendermi: il mio ex, Nicolas Allister, un ragazzo a cui voglio bene, ma che non ho mai amato veramente; mio padre e i suoi occhi tristi per la perdita della donna della sua vita, nonché la mia amata madre, e Carter, l’ultimo uomo che avrei voluto rivedere, l’unico che è riuscito a farmi perdere completamente la testa e a impossessarsi del mio cuore per poi distruggerlo.
Appena l’ho notato in mezzo alla folla ho sentito rimescolarsi dentro un mix esplosivo di emozioni; lui non si è accorto di me, troppo intento a discutere fitto fitto con mia zia Candice, ma io sì, e anche se la sorella di mio padre è un po’ più grande di Carter, non lo è abbastanza, non per me. Li ho osservati, mentre lui le parlava complice e lei rideva a qualche stupida battuta, e come una povera sciocca mi sono ritrovata a essere gelosa di mia zia e di un uomo che non vuole più avere niente a che fare con me.
Ho dovuto trovare un diversivo e ho optato per due chiacchiere con mia sorella, ma non è bastato, anzi è stato peggio perché il punto in cui eravamo io e Calliope mi forniva una visuale più nitida della scena che volevo evitare.
Di quegli istanti con Callie ricordo solo che ho posto delle domande vacue, e poi devo aver detto qualche cattiveria su Nicolas, ma non ne sono certa. Il mio cervello era confuso, come ora, e nelle mie orecchie pompava furioso il rumore del mio battito cardiaco.
Quello che ho bene impresso è il sorriso di Carter, sexy e sfacciato, e il modo particolare che ha di muoversi fra la gente, come se nessuno potesse toccarlo. Ha un incedere deciso e affascinante, ha le movenze di una pantera e la pericolosità di una tigre, ma quando si ferma e ti osserva con i suoi occhi penetranti sembra pronto a sbranarti, come un leone.
Tre animali in un solo uomo, tre animali letali. Un po’ come lui, ché è quel genere di maschio capace di entrarti dentro senza che neppure te ne accorga: non lascia scampo, e lo fa senza menzogne o giri di parole.
Non è possibile resistergli, per me almeno è stato così.
Il mio soggiorno a Parigi è stato inutile, quindi, così come i tre bicchieri di champagne che ho buttato giù tutto d’un fiato.
Quando la situazione è diventata insopportabile, non ho potuto fare altro che scappare da quel casino e dai miei demoni, rifugiandomi in un angolo tranquillo della residenza.
La nostra villa negli Hamptons è un luogo che racchiude molti momenti felici della mia infanzia e adolescenza, ma stasera è testimone di una delle mie notti peggiori.
Ora mi ritrovo seduta sulle scale del piccolo portico della dependance; la musica della festa mi arriva attutita, e l’unica luce che rischiara la notte è quella della luna.
Tolgo i sandali argentati che mi stanno torturando i piedi e mi appoggio alla trave del parapetto, poi fisso l’orizzonte davanti a me: l’oceano è calmo, ed è così in contrasto con ciò che provo che quasi mi scappa da ridere… quasi.
Vorrei urlare, strillare e prendere a pugni qualcosa, mi sento uno schifo, e ora che lui è qui, in un luogo tanto importante per me, ho la sensazione di essere braccata e messa con le spalle al muro. Non da Carter, ma dai miei errori, commessi uno dopo l’altro in poco tempo.
Se solo mi fossi comportata meglio, se solo quella maledetta sera gli avessi detto la verità! A mia discolpa devo dire che lui mi ha paralizzata con i suoi occhi, con le sue parole e quel suo modo particolare di spiegare le cose. Per la prima volta, dopo non so più neanche quanto tempo, ho conosciuto qualcuno di diverso, di diametralmente opposto a ciò a cui sono stata abituata negli anni, e ho avuto paura: paura di rovinare tutto rivelandomi per quella che sono in realtà.
Carter è stato un lampo di luce in un momento di buio, la scossa che mi serviva per trovare nuove prospettive, nuovi desideri. E non ho potuto fare a meno di compiere ogni cosa in mio potere per far sì che la magia creatasi fra noi, in quel bar, non sparisse subito.
Non mi sono comportata come avrei dovuto, sono uscita dai miei schemi abituali e ne ho pagate le conseguenze.
Ho pagato un prezzo altissimo per ogni bugia che è uscita dalla mia bocca.
Prima di incontrare Carter ero morta, ma non lo sapevo. Lui è stato il mio defibrillatore: le sue mani le piastre sul mio petto, i suoi baci le scariche che mi hanno riportata in vita. Mi odio per aver rovinato una cosa così bella, breve, ma fantastica.
Mi odio per essermi innamorata di lui.
Se ripenso al come e al quando ci siamo conosciuti, lo trovo assurdo. Avevo un appuntamento con il responsabile di un centro di volontariato sociale e medico a Rio, ma non sapevo altro, avevano organizzato tutto mio padre e mia zia. Mi dovevo trovare all’Hilton alle quattro del pomeriggio, ma avevo sbagliato a segnare il giorno sulla mia agenda, e quando mi sono resa conto dell’errore è stato troppo tardi: sono arrivata con due ore di ritardo. Non c’era traccia di mia zia Candice e non avevo idea dell’aspetto dell’uomo che dovevo incontrare, quindi, mortificata, ho optato per bere un drink al bancone del bar.
E lì tutto ha avuto inizio, lì ho incontrato lui.
«Non pensavo di vederti stasera.»
La sua voce, quella voce, è l’ultima che mi sarei aspettata di sentire qui, nel mio angolo privato.
«Se non lo sai, questa è casa mia» dico senza guardarlo.
«Mi hanno detto che sei fuggita a Parigi, proprio dopo che ci siamo rivisti a Central Park.»
Sospiro e non replico. Che bisogno c’è, in fondo, di ammettere che quando l’ho rivisto, dopo essere stata scaricata da lui in modo tanto netto, ho preferito scappare piuttosto che restare e correre il rischio di dovergli parlare? Averlo accanto e non poterlo considerare mio mi uccide.
«Non hai nulla da dire?» domanda, divertito.
«Cosa vuoi, Carter?» lo rimbecco. «Ti stavi annoiando con mia zia?»
«Direi di no» risponde, mettendo le mani nelle tasche dei pantaloni.
Indossa un completo; nei dieci giorni in cui si è consumata la nostra storia non l’ho mai visto con qualcosa di diverso da un paio di jeans e una camicia.
Devo ammettere che gli sta bene, esalta il suo bel fisico e, se possibile, lo rende ancora più affascinante. La prima cosa che ho notato stasera sono stati la barba fatta di tutto punto, cosa insolita per lui, e i capelli più corti.
«Allora dovresti tornare da lei» riprendo, aspra.
«Volevo solo dirti che mi dispiace per tua madre. Quando ci siamo rivisti a Central Park non avevo idea di quello che era appena successo.»
«Sei qui per compatirmi» commento amara, poi mi alzo dai gradini e salgo sul portico.
Carter prende un pacchetto di sigarette e se ne accende una, e d’istinto mi avvicino e gliela sfilo dalle labbra per poter fare qualche tiro. Lui preferisce accendersene un’altra e io mi godo il gusto della nicotina. Non sono una grande fumatrice, e non fumo mai davanti ai miei familiari, ma nell’ultimo periodo il vizio è diventato più forte. Forse perché fumare mi ricorda la sigaretta condivisa dopo i nostri amplessi, quando la sua saliva si mischiava alla mia e viceversa.
«No, volevo solo dirti che mi dispiace» puntualizza. Sembra sincero, ma sono troppo ferita per far sì che me ne importi qualcosa. «Me l’ha detto Callie» aggiunge.
«La mia sorellina…» sussurro. «Ti sei portato a letto anche lei? E ora ci vuoi provare anche con mia zia?»
«Grace…» mi rimprovera.
In tutta onestà non so se sono io a parlare o l’alcol che ho bevuto, sta di fatto che tutti i miei filtri sono stati disintegrati. Lo fisso negli occhi e tiro un sorriso, uno di quelli palesemente finti.
«Forse puoi ottenere un premio se alla fine ti fai tutte le Turner» chioso con cattiveria.
Carter si fa vicino, troppo vicino, e il suo profumo invade il mio spazio vitale. Provo a chiudere la porta ai ricordi di noi due insieme, ma sto solo rinnegando me stessa.
«Non fare la stronza, Grace» sbotta. «O preferisci che ti chiami Margaret?»
«Continuerai con questa storia ancora per molto?»
«Hai iniziato tu, in quel fottuto bar, la sera che ci siamo incontrati. Ti sei finta un’altra, mi hai dato un nome falso…»
«È il mio secondo nome» obietto.
«Mi hai detto di essere una contabile, di abitare vicino ad Harlem…»
«Non sono proprio menzogne» dico convinta. «Seguo la contabilità della fondazione e sono cresciuta nel Upper East side, che è vicino ad Harlem.»
Scuote la testa e fa un passo indietro, poi prende un tiro profondo della sigaretta e io osservo come incantata il tabacco bruciare, proprio come il mio cuore sta facendo per lui.
Che patetica.
«Tu sai solo dire cazzate.»
«Eppure ti piaceva quando urlavo il tuo nome.»
«Se avessi saputo la verità» ribatte, prima di prendere un altro tiro e avvicinarsi a un vaso pieno di terra per spegnere la sigaretta «non sarei mai uscito con te.»
«Me lo hai detto quando hai scoperto tutto, e me lo hai ripetuto quando ci siamo rivisti a Central Park» mormoro, dandogli le spalle. «Ti ho già detto che mi dispiace, ma anche che sono sempre stata sincera quando eravamo insieme. Non ho mai mentito su ciò che provavo.»
«Non conta.»
«Per me sì» ammetto. «Saranno stati una manciata di giorni, ma io per te…» Mi blocco, non so quanto dire. Ho paura che lui possa calpestare i miei sentimenti.
«Cos’hai provato, Grace?» incalza, e il suo tono di voce è completamente cambiato.
Mi afferra per un braccio e mi fa voltare ancora verso di lui. Siamo faccia a faccia, adesso, e senza distogliere lo sguardo dal mio, Carter prende la sigaretta dalle mie labbra, giunta al termine, e la butta vicino a dove ha spento la sua.
«Non farlo…» lo supplico.
Le sue mani si posano sulle mie braccia e sento le gambe tremare. So che non è colpa del vino, ma dell’effetto che lui ha su di me.
«Ti piace giocare solo secondo le tue regole?» sibila.
«Non ho mai giocato» insisto, e mi trema la voce.
Carter fa schioccare la lingua sul palato e scuote la testa; non crede alle mie parole, ma non è una grossa novità.
«Con chi, non hai mai giocato? Con me o con il tuo perfetto fidanzato che ti aspettava nel vostro lussuoso attico?» chiede maligno.
«Non sai nulla di me e Nicolas» provo a difendermi, ma so che è impossibile.
«Sai perché?» ribatte lui, e faccio segno di no con la testa. «Non so nulla di voi perché ero convinto che tu fossi single» prosegue «e non avevo idea che la ragazza che scopava con me e che passava ogni notte nel mio letto aveva un dannato ragazzo!»
«Carter…»
Ristabilisce un po’ di distanza, ma non ne sono felice. Nonostante lui sia arrabbiato, averlo a un passo da me mi fa sentire meno ansiosa.
«Mi sono chiesto decine di volte come riuscivi a destreggiarti tra me e lui» riprende. «Che scuse inventavi?»
«Non dovrebbe più importarti, giusto?»
«No, infatti» conferma.
«Io vorrei…» Prendo fiato, e per un’istante mi sembra di essere una ragazzina impacciata e non una donna, ma devo farmi coraggio e provare ad afferrare ciò che voglio. «Vorrei che tu mi dessi un’altra possibilità.»
Non so esattamente cosa succede, in pochi secondi, ma so che mi ritrovo con il corpo premuto tra il legno della dependance e il fisico di Carter, le sue labbra sulle mie. Non deve fare nessuno sforzo per farsi largo nella mia bocca.
Dio, quanto mi è mancato sentire i nostri respiri diventare uno solo, sentire il suo sapore. Anche le sue mani mi sono mancate, e ora stanno percorrendo il mio corpo facendomi sentire migliaia di brividi.
Il bacio si fa subito più intenso ed esigente. Non riesco a evitare di strusciarmi contro di lui, perché voglio di più, lo voglio sentire tutto. Non posso credere a ciò che sta accadendo, non voglio aprire gli occhi e scoprire che è tutta colpa della mia immaginazione. Ma non è così, le sue labbra si spostano sul mio collo, le mani stanno accarezzando i miei seni sopra il tessuto leggero del vestito e le mie dita cercano la cerniera dei suoi pantaloni, in preda a puro desiderio. Nessuno dei due parla, tra di noi solo il rumore dei nostri respiri e la musica in sottofondo.
Mi alza la gamba, mentre io gli abbasso le mutande; non c’è nulla di romantico in ciò che stiamo facendo, ma c’è passione, quella carnale, viscerale, e quando finalmente scivola dentro di me, lascio andare la testa all’indietro e appoggio la nuca alla parete. Carter spinge, lo fa con colpi secchi e decisi, quasi rabbiosi.
E capisco.
Questo è il suo modo di chiudere, di dirmi addio: sta tagliando quel filo sottile che in qualche modo ci teneva ancora legati. Ma io non voglio perderlo, così mi aggrappo a lui e a questo momento. Se tutto quello che posso avere è qui e adesso, allora farò in modo di non dimenticarmi neppure di un frammento di ciò che siamo ora.
Ci avviciniamo entrambi al punto di non ritorno, al momento in cui entrambi cederemo al piacere più assoluto.
La situazione ha un non so che di ironico. Ho vissuto tutta la vita ottenendo ogni cosa io volessi, e l’unica volta in cui desidero davvero qualcosa, mi sfugge di mano facendomi vedere tutte le pecche della mia fragile esistenza.
L’orgasmo colpisce Carter, rendendolo per un attimo vulnerabile fra le mie braccia e ansimante, con la fronte appoggiata sulla mia spalla. Vorrei non si spostasse, che rimanesse qui con me… dentro di me. Eppure so che non è un’opzione, e sento il mio cuore recuperare il battito normale. Più rallenta la propria corsa, più il dolore si fa intenso.
Lo amo.
Quando si scosta da me, facendomi provare un freddo glaciale in una serata calda e secca, Carter punta i suoi occhi per un attimo nei miei, poi li abbassa per sistemarsi i pantaloni. Sono pietrificata e non so cosa dire. Io, che ho sempre la battuta pronta, ora non ho neppure una parola per difendermi da quello che sta accadendo.
«Devo tornare dentro.»
Annuisco.
«Quello che è successo adesso…» continua, poi si passa nuovamente la mano fra i capelli e si rassetta la camicia, nervoso. «Questo è stato un cazzo di errore.»
«Ok.»
«Nessuna frase pungente da scagliarmi contro?» chiede acido.
«No.»
«Bene, credo che non abbiamo più nulla da dirci.»
Fa per allontanarsi, ma sento la necessità di porgergli un’ultima domanda.
«Non hai provato nulla per me?»
Trattengo il fiato: ho paura della sua risposta e di quello che può causarmi, eppure devo saperlo, ho bisogno di capire.
Carter si blocca e irrigidisce le spalle, poi afferra il corrimano, stringendolo così forte da farmi temere per il legno a cui si è aggrappato. Non si volta, resta di spalle, ma intravedo un piccolo movimento della testa verso il basso.
«Ho provato qualcosa» sussurra, e mi sento invadere da uno strano senso di pace che però viene subito sostituito da qualcosa di più brutto. «Ho provato qualcosa, ma non per te. Ciò che sei, quello che rappresenti, non mi piace. Tu non mi piaci. Mi piaceva la donna che hai finto di essere in quei giorni, ma non esiste, tu non esisti. Non per me.»
«Carter…» Riesco a malapena a pronunciare il suo nome, tanto è il male che provo ascoltando le sue parole.
«Vai avanti, Grace, trova un altro idiota con cui divertirti. Io ho chiuso.»
Riprende a camminare senza neppure aspettare una risposta, che comunque non arriva. Lo osservo andarsene e vorrei piangere, ma dai miei occhi non esce neppure una lacrima.
Io non piango, io non mi dispero. Però a ogni secondo che passa qualcosa dentro me si spezza, e il mio cuore va in mille pezzi.
E la colpa è mia.
Non posso tornare indietro, ma posso sperare che il tempo allevi il dolore che ora sta distruggendo la mia già precaria sanità mentale.
Dio, se fa schifo l’amore.
